Dubai Airport to Roll Out More Self-Service and Biometric Upgrades
Dubai International Airport is introducing expanded biometric screening, more self-service facilities and smarter passenger systems to reduce queues and make travel faster and more seamless.

New technology, expanded self-service and enhanced passenger facilities aim to transform the airport experience for millions
Dubai International Airport (DXB) is preparing for the next phase of its evolution, introducing a series of technology-driven upgrades designed to make travel faster, smoother and more convenient for millions of passengers.
The improvements include expanded biometric processing, additional self-service facilities, a redesigned remote departures experience and smarter passenger flow systems. Together, the changes reflect Dubai Airports' long-term strategy to create a more seamless, touchless airport journey while supporting the growing number of travellers expected in the coming months.
DXB expands biometric technology for faster passenger journeys
Dubai Airports is continuing to enhance its biometric systems, allowing eligible travellers to move through key checkpoints using facial recognition instead of repeatedly presenting passports and boarding passes.
Biometric technology is already available at multiple stages of the passenger journey, including check-in, immigration, lounge access and boarding. Smart Gates have significantly reduced passport control times, while Emirates has invested more than Dh85 million in over 200 biometric cameras across Terminal 3.
One of the airport's newest innovations, the AI-powered Red Carpet immigration corridor, can process up to ten travellers simultaneously, with some passengers clearing immigration in as little as six seconds. The latest upgrades are expected to further expand these touchless travel experiences.
More self-service options planned across Dubai Airport
Passengers can also expect a wider rollout of self-service technology throughout DXB.
The airport plans to expand facilities that already allow travellers to complete check-in, print boarding passes, tag baggage and drop luggage without visiting traditional airline counters. Although Dubai Airports has not yet revealed which terminals will receive the upgrades first, the expansion is expected to reduce queues while giving passengers greater control over their airport experience.
The move aligns with the aviation industry's growing shift towards automation, allowing airports to process larger passenger volumes more efficiently during peak travel periods.
DXB introduces a smoother remote departures experience
Dubai Airports is also redesigning how passengers board flights departing from remote aircraft stands.
Currently, travellers on remote stand flights typically wait in holding lounges before boarding buses that transport them to aircraft parked away from terminal gates. Under the new "consolidated remote departures experience," several parts of this journey are expected to be streamlined into a more organised process.
While detailed operational plans have not yet been released, the initiative aims to reduce waiting times, improve passenger movement and create a more comfortable boarding experience.
Airport upgrades focus on passenger comfort and operational efficiency
Beyond digital services, Dubai Airports is investing in improvements to passenger areas across the airport.
Smarter operational systems are being introduced to improve passenger flow, reduce congestion and optimise movement through terminals. Waiting areas are also being upgraded to offer greater comfort while helping the airport manage increasing passenger volumes more efficiently.
The infrastructure enhancements are designed to improve both the customer experience and airport operations as Dubai continues strengthening its position as one of the world's leading international aviation hubs.
Travellers increasingly embrace biometric and digital travel
The expansion comes as global passenger preferences continue shifting towards digital travel experiences.
According to IATA's 2025 Global Passenger Survey, half of all travellers have already used facial recognition during part of their airport journey. Nearly three-quarters said they would willingly share biometric information if it reduced the need for repeated passport or boarding pass checks.
The survey also found that 78% of passengers want a single smartphone-based solution capable of managing digital passports, boarding passes, payments and loyalty programmes throughout their journey.
Dubai Airport prepares for stronger second-half recovery
The latest investments arrive as DXB prepares for a stronger recovery in international travel.
Dubai International handled 31.5 million passengers during the first half of 2026. Passenger numbers steadily increased throughout the second quarter, rising from 3.5 million in April to five million in June as airline operations gradually recovered.
By the end of June, nearly 50 international airlines were operating from DXB, connecting travellers to 217 destinations across 99 countries.
Dubai Airports expects passenger traffic to accelerate further during the second half of the year, supported by expanded airline schedules, increased international connectivity, major global exhibitions, business events and the busy winter tourism season.
Dubai Airport's future is becoming increasingly digital
With biometric identification, AI-powered immigration, expanded self-service technology and smarter terminal operations, Dubai International Airport is steadily moving towards a future where passengers spend less time in queues and more time travelling.
As global aviation increasingly embraces automation and contactless technologies, DXB's latest upgrades reinforce Dubai's ambition to remain one of the world's most innovative, efficient and passenger-friendly airports.
