UAE Golden Visa: Overseas Graduates Could Qualify for 10-Year Residency
Graduates of the world’s top 100 universities may qualify for a 10-year UAE Golden Visa if they meet the 3.5 GPA requirement, graduate within two years and have their degree recognised. Here’s how eligibility and applications work.

Graduated from a leading university abroad? A strong academic record could open the door to a decade of UAE residency — but your university’s ranking, GPA and graduation date all matter.
A degree from one of the world’s leading universities could be more than a qualification for your next career move. For some recent graduates, it may also be a route to 10-year residency in the UAE.
The country’s Golden Visa programme includes a category for outstanding graduates of international universities, meaning eligible applicants do not necessarily have to complete their studies inside the Emirates to qualify.
But the opportunity comes with strict conditions. Applicants must have graduated from a university ranked among the world’s top 100 under a ranking system recognised by the UAE Ministry of Education, achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5, and graduated within the past two years.
The degree must also be recognised by the UAE authorities. Meeting the academic criteria does not automatically guarantee approval.
Here is what international graduates need to know about eligibility, recognised universities, application procedures and the benefits of the UAE Golden Visa.
Who is eligible for the UAE Golden Visa as an international graduate?
The UAE Golden Residency criteria for graduates of international universities set out four main requirements.
1. Your university must rank among the world’s top 100
Applicants must have completed their bachelor’s degree at a university ranked among the top 100 globally, according to an international ranking recognised by the UAE Ministry of Education.
The university’s reputation alone is not enough. Applicants should verify that their institution meets the applicable ranking criteria and appears on the relevant official list.
2. You must have a minimum GPA of 3.5
Graduates must have achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, or its equivalent, in their bachelor’s degree.
Applicants whose grading systems use percentages or a different scale should confirm how their academic performance is assessed for UAE Golden Visa eligibility.
3. You must have graduated within the past two years
The graduation date is another important condition.
No more than two years must have passed since the applicant graduated at the time of applying. This means the category is specifically aimed at recent graduates rather than people who completed their degree several years ago.
4. Your degree must be recognised in the UAE
The academic qualification must be attested or recognised by the UAE Ministry of Education, with an equivalency certificate required for overseas qualifications under the applicable process.
Applicants should check the current document-recognition procedure before submitting a Golden Visa nomination request.
These conditions apply specifically to the international university graduates category. Other Golden Visa categories may have different eligibility requirements.
Which international universities are recognised for the UAE Golden Visa?
The UAE government provides information on recognised international universities and the ranking criteria used for Golden Residency eligibility.
Institutions commonly associated with the world’s leading universities include:
- Harvard University
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
- Stanford University
- University of Oxford
- University of Cambridge
However, graduating from a globally famous institution does not automatically make someone eligible.
The relevant university must meet the ranking criteria recognised by the UAE Ministry of Education. Applicants should consult the official university list and verify their institution’s status before proceeding.
The ranking system and eligibility requirements should be checked at the time of application, as recognition criteria may be updated.
How to apply for the UAE Golden Visa as an overseas graduate
Graduates who meet the academic requirements can proceed with a Golden Visa nomination request through the relevant authority.
Depending on the emirate and application route, this may involve the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA Dubai), or the Abu Dhabi Residents Office (ADRO).
The general process involves the following steps:
- Check your university’s ranking: Confirm that your university meets the top-100 requirement under the ranking system recognised by the UAE Ministry of Education.
- Review your GPA: Ensure that your cumulative bachelor’s degree GPA is at least 3.5 or its equivalent.
- Confirm your graduation date: Check that no more than two years have passed since your graduation.
- Prepare your academic documents: Gather your bachelor’s degree certificate and official academic transcripts.
- Complete degree recognition or equivalency: Obtain the required attestation or UAE Ministry of Education equivalency documentation.
- Submit a Golden Visa nomination request: Apply through the appropriate immigration or residency authority.
- Wait for assessment: The relevant authorities will review your eligibility and documents.
Applicants should follow the official instructions for their chosen application channel, as document requirements and procedures can vary.
What are the benefits of the UAE Golden Visa?
The UAE Golden Visa offers eligible individuals long-term residency without the need for a conventional local sponsor.
For qualifying graduates, the residency permit is valid for 10 years, subject to the applicable rules.
Key benefits include:
10-year renewable residency
The Golden Visa provides long-term stability for eligible residents, allowing them to live in the UAE without needing to renew a standard residence visa every few years.
Live, work, study and invest in the UAE
Golden Residency offers flexibility for eligible holders to live, work, study and invest in the country, subject to applicable laws and work authorisation requirements.
Sponsor eligible family members
Golden Visa holders can sponsor eligible family members, including spouses and children, subject to the relevant regulations. Family sponsorship conditions should be checked with the authorities.
Sponsor domestic workers
Eligible Golden Visa holders can sponsor domestic workers in accordance with UAE regulations.
Entry arrangements for applicants outside the UAE
Eligible applicants outside the country may be able to obtain a six-month multiple-entry visa, renewable for a further six months, to complete residency procedures, subject to the applicable rules.
Family residency protection
Under the applicable Golden Residency rules, sponsored family members may be permitted to remain in the UAE until their residence permits expire if the Golden Visa holder dies.
Does graduating from a top university guarantee a UAE Golden Visa?
No. A degree from a top-ranked university is only one part of the eligibility criteria.
Applicants must also meet the minimum GPA requirement, have graduated within the specified two-year period and complete the required degree recognition process.
The nomination request is subject to assessment and approval by the relevant UAE authorities. Applicants should not assume that meeting the academic conditions automatically results in a visa being issued.
Can you apply if you graduated more than two years ago?
The international university graduates category requires that no more than two years have passed since graduation at the time of application.
Graduates who completed their degree earlier may not qualify under this particular route. However, they may wish to review other UAE Golden Visa categories, depending on their qualifications, professional experience, achievements or circumstances.

What should graduates check before applying?
Before submitting a Golden Visa nomination request, applicants should verify:
- Whether their university meets the recognised top-100 ranking requirement
- Whether their bachelor’s GPA is at least 3.5 or equivalent
- Whether they graduated within the past two years
- Whether their degree has been attested or recognised in the UAE
- Which authority handles their application
- Whether any additional documents are required
The requirements are specific to the international university graduates category. Applicants should consult the official Golden Residency guidance and the relevant authority before making decisions based on their eligibility.
